What a short-stay Type C Schengen visa covers, and how the consulate that issues it is decided.
- Countries covered
- All 29 Schengen states, whichever consulate issued the visa. Ireland is not one of them: it is in the EU but outside Schengen and runs its own visa system.
- Which consulate
- The one for your main destination: the country where you will spend the most nights. Equal nights, it is the country you enter first. One country only, that country.
- If you get it wrong
- The consulate can refuse the application as one it is not competent to decide, or transfer it. Either way you lose the appointment and the time, and the fee is generally not refunded.
- How long you can stay
- Up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, across the area as a whole. The window moves with you, so any given day looks back at the previous 180.
- What it does not cover
- Work, study or settlement. Those are national visas with their own routes. A Schengen visa is for short stays only.
- Consulate fee
- EUR 90 adult, EUR 45 child aged six to eleven, set by the EU and the same wherever you apply. Service fees at the visa centre are charged on top.
- Insurance
- Travel medical cover of at least EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen states for your entire stay, not only the country you apply to.
- Applying from the UK
- Open to any non-UK national legally resident here, on a visa or with indefinite leave to remain, through the visa application centre for that consulate.

The main destination rule
Which Schengen country should I apply to?
The country where you will spend the most nights.
That single sentence decides which consulate your application goes to, and it is the question people get wrong most often. Not the country you fly into. Not the country whose flights were cheapest. The country where you will sleep the greatest number of nights.
Where the nights are split equally between two or more countries, the application goes to the country you enter first. Where you are visiting one country only, that country is your main destination and there is nothing to decide.
It catches people out because the obvious airport is rarely the main destination. A trip that flies into Paris and then spends eight of its ten nights in Italy is an Italian application, not a French one. Apply to the wrong consulate and the file can be refused as one that consulate is not competent to decide, before anyone reads a word of it. The visa fee is generally not refunded, and the refusal is on your record the next time you apply.

The seven busiest routes, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands and Belgium, have pages of their own, and France changed most recently: since August 2026 TLScontact allocates French appointments from a queue rather than an open calendar, so the file has to be ready before the date lands. What you actually get
One visa, ninety days, twenty-nine countries
A short-stay Type C Schengen visa is valid across all twenty-nine states, whichever consulate issued it. Once it is in your passport, the internal borders are not the constraint. You apply once, through one consulate, and travel across the area within the dates you are given.
The limit is time, not geography: ninety days in any rolling one-hundred-and-eighty-day period, counted across the Schengen area as a whole rather than per country. The window moves with you, so the count on any given day looks back at the previous one hundred and eighty. A visa may also be issued for a shorter period than the maximum, and the dates printed on it are the ones that bind.
Two things a Schengen visa is not. It is not permission to work, study or settle; those are national visas, applied for differently. And it does not cover Ireland, which is in the European Union but outside Schengen and runs its own visa system.
The visa is the same wherever it is issued. What differs is the consulate that issues it, and what that consulate expects to see in your file.
